There are many types of online advertising, most of which today does not work.
Like all ads, some types of online advertising will be better suited to your company than others. Take the time to research what’s available, and which method will work best for your business before you commit yourself to online advertising spend. If your potential customers are likely to be using the Internet on a regular basis, it’s worth looking at how you can attract them by advertising on the Internet. There are several online advertising methods you can use - some of which will be more expensive than others, some more effective and some that just will not get any results at all. The biggest thing to consider is, you may have the best site in the world, but if no one can find it, it’s useless and on the flip side, if everyone can see it and the content is not good, that is also useless.
Popular types of online advertising include:
1. PAY PER CLICK - Search engines place your website on their front page and you pay a set amount per click-through. Most pay per click sites will also run bids for certain keywords - the more you bid, the higher your site appears on the first page of the search results. You have no control over things like your competitor clicking on your ad 500 times and eating up your clicks.
2. SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO): is the primary function here at Aardvark Internet Development is to boost your rankings in the Organic Listings of the search engines. Most people do not look at the paid listings I think because they haven’t earned their way there! Studies have shown that many searchers prefer to use the “natural” listings provided by the search engines, rather than the paid-for type listings.
3. BANNER ADVERTISEMENTS: Usually horizontal or vertical bars (sometimes referred to as skyscraper ads, see below for more info) across the top, bottom and sometimes in the middle of a web page, they can be still, full of graphics and many times animated, together with the ability to click through to the advertiser’s own website. Banner adverts have been reducing in popularity lately, as research shows that users don’t stay interested for long enough to read all the animation, although static ads with a simple message are still simi-effective. We at Aardvark Internet Development, use a Mini Vertical banner to help promote our advertisers as a supplement only, our primary content is your promotion as a third party endorsement.
4. SKY SCRAPER AD: Similar to banner ads, these ads run vertically down the left or right hand side of the page, allowing the ad to stay in view as the user scrolls down the page. They can also be still, full of graphics or animated and offer a click-through function to move users to the advertiser’s own site. As they are larger spaces, sky-scraper adverts are more expensive than banner adverts. We use the Vertical or Mini Sky Scraper ads as a supplement only in our Blog Shells, most of your click throughs will come directly from our content within our site using specifically developed SEO techniques within our company that are implemented and built into our sites.
5. SPONSORSHIP: can come in two formats; 1.) regular sponsorship where the advertiser has a space to place their logo and company message. 2.) Content sponsorship where the advertiser has limited control and submits their own content to the site as well as having an advertisement on the page. These sponsorships will be for fixed periods, and MUST be on targeted websites to reach the right audience.
6. ONLINE DIRECTORIES: The online equivalent of Yellow Pages, or Industry Directories, these give you basic or enhanced listings on their website. Your details will come up IF your sector, location or company name is searched for on that specific site, but first you need to get there! Enhanced listings will allow users to click-through to your own site. Online directory listings are often offered in conjunction with an entry in the printed version of the directory that helps land them on the site to begin with. Remember, most directories do not get you on the serach engine and that is where people find you when they need something they want to buy!
7. POP UPS AND POP DOWNS - These are those annoying small and sometimes large windows that appear when you first get onto a website or just after you leave . Pop-ups appear on your screen in full, pop-downs appear on the bar at the bottom of your screen and you have to open them to get rid of them. Most surveys have found that most Internet users find pop up or pop down advertising is still considered very intrusive and annoying.
8. INTERSTITIAL ADVERTISEMENTS: - these advertisements are sometimes referred to as Bridge Advertisements, they pop up on you r computer as you move between pages of a site. You have no choice as to whether you view them or not, although you can close them down. Research has shown that these ads are very annoying to the end user also.
So with all of these various ways of advertising, by far the best way to capture a customer or client is through third party endorsements and organic or natural placement of your company or product. By far the organic or natural placement on the search engine will afford you the biggest bang for the buck!
