The Reinheitsgebot  sometimes called the “German Beer Purity Law” was a regulation that dates back to 1516.  This regulation or law set the  standards for the sale and composition of beer. Before its official repeal in 1987, it was the oldest food quality regulation in the world.  Gordon Biersch follows this principle to bring you the best beer possible! The Reinheitsgebot says Beer can only be made with 3 ingredients!   Barley, Hops and Water.  Interestingly, at the time (1516) no one knew that yeast was involved in the process.  So yeast has since been added as the fourth ingredient.  At Biersch the beer is naturally carbonated!

Jason Thompson is your local Head Brewer here in Burbank California.  He orchestrates the whole process from beginning to end!  The grain which is the Malted Barley, is measured and cracked and then added to the brew kettle and heated, this process extracts the sugar.  The Grain is then washed and then the during the boil the hops are added which creates the balance or the bittering of the beer.  The Hops are grown on a vine and are somewhat resemble a flower.  This mixture is then cold filtered and the yeast is added to begin fermentation.  This process takes between 10 and 12 hours of the first day of brewing.  After about a week the yeast is removed.  For the next 5 weeks the beer becomes naturally carbonated, becomes more full bodied and that pure, natural Gordon Biersch flavor is born!

The amazing thing is that Jason keeps his Brewery spotless, I thought I was in a hospital!  This is truly an amazing process and he really enjoys his job as the Head Brewer and it shows in the pride he takes in making us the best beer possible!  Jason and I just had to try the new Sommergold, just to make sure that it was going to be ready for the tapping party this Tuesday the 24th of June from 530-7pm.  And yes, I can tell you it is really good brew!

You’ve got to come by and join us and sample the new Sommergold for 2008, it is truly an awesome beer!  the Burbank Gordon Biersch is just off the 5 freeway at the Olive exit and in the heart of downtown on the corner of San Fernando and Angeleno which is one block east of Olive, see you on Tuesday!

Thank you Jason the Head Brewer for the tour and Joseph the General Manager who is the probably the hardest working GM in the business!
